·
Nighthawk App
So, let’s dive in:
Netgear Range Extender Setup
Plug the extender into a wall somewhere near your main
router. Don’t get fancy yet. You’re not throwing it at the far end of the
house right away. You got to set it up first. Once it’s in, wait for the Power
LED to go solid.
Through WPS
Go to your router — that box your ISP gave you or whatever —
and look for a button labeled “WPS.” Usually on the back. Might be tiny. Might
need a pen. Do not hold it down forever. Just tap it. It’ll usually blink or
flash to tell you it’s in WPS pairing mode.
You usually have 2 minutes to connect the extender. Now go back
to your Netgear extender and hit its WPS button. Again, just press it once.
Don’t hold it unless it’s specifically labeled “Factory Reset” or something
equally scary.
Light should start blinking — probably the “WPS” or “Link”
LED. If all goes well, within a minute or two, that light will go solid. Connected.
Through Mywifiext
Grab your laptop and look for a new WiFi network. It'll be
something like: NETGEAR_EXT Connect to that. No password, it’s open (for now).
Your device might whine about “No internet.” That’s fine. You don’t need
internet for this setup step.
1.
Open up a browser and type in: mywifiext.net (or
mywifiext.local if you're on a Mac). If that doesn't work — and this part always
trips people up — try this instead: Type in the IP directly: 192.168.1.250.
Still not loading? Try another browser.
2.
You’ll hit a setup screen. Hit “New Extender
Setup.” Create an account (ugh, I know). Just make up a username and password.
They don’t email you or anything, it’s local. Click through the terms.
3.
It’ll scan for your main WiFi networks. Pick
your SSID (the one you use every day). Enter your WiFi password. Then you’ll
choose what you want to name the extended network — or just let it slap _EXT on
the end of your original name. Hit next. It’ll take a minute or two to link
everything up.
Once it’s done, it’ll show you a success screen and tell you
to reconnect your device to the new extended network.
Through Nighthawk App
You’ll find it on iOS or Android — just search “Netgear
Nighthawk.” Install that. It’s... fine. Not great UX, but it gets the job done.
1.
You will need a Netgear account. If you
don’t have one, it’s going to make you create one before you can do anything.
Just get it over with. Once you're logged in, hit the little "+" icon
to add a new device.
2.
Now here’s where things get mildly annoying —
the app tries to auto-detect devices but usually fails. Don’t wait forever.
Just hit “Range Extender” manually and pick your model.
3.
Once the extender is detected (or manually
selected), it'll scan for your existing WiFi. Pick your main network, the one
from your router, and enter the password. Yes, your real password, not the one
you wish it was.
4.
The extender will create a new network name,
usually your existing SSID with “_EXT” at the end. You can change it if you
want.
5.
It’ll say “connecting,” and if you’re lucky,
it’ll just work. If it hangs? Restart the extender. Seriously. Unplug it, count
to ten like you’re diffusing a bomb, and plug it back in. Sometimes the app
doesn’t catch up until you do that.
Once the extender’s done doing its thing, switch your phone
or laptop to the _EXT network. Make sure it’s working. Run a speed test. Check
a few websites.
Now, you should also register your device (extender) from
the MyNetgear platform
which you will find on the web as well as on the Nighthawk app.
